How do I apply?

Apply through the UNH Graduate School.

You will be asked to contact Dr. Mimi Larsen Becker, the faculty advisor for the program by e-mail (mimi.becker@unh.edu) prior to submitting your materials to discuss your personal goals and explore specific questions you might have.

The application deadline is February 15 each year. All materials, including your application form, personal statement, three recommendations and transcripts must be submitted by that deadline. GRE scores are required.

Personal Statements
Your personal statement must include information requested by the graduate school as well as by the TIDES program. The UNH graduate school will ask that you “Prepare a brief but careful statement regarding the reasons why you wish to do graduate work in this field, including your immediate and long range objectives."

The TIDES program will ask you to respond to two additional requirements: 1) State the reasons why you are specifically interested in the TIDES Professional training program, including your immediate and long range objectives; and 2) Based upon your experience and/or reading, explain why developed societies continue to have great difficulty in solving ecosystem problems despite existing and continual production of high quality science and knowledge.

Reference-Recommendation Forms
The UNH Graduate Application asks for your references to complete a general recommendation form and add either comments or attach a letter. In addition to an overall assessment of your candidacy for an interdisciplinary program like TIDES, please request those who will be providing recommendations to assess your capacity to:

  1. integrate and synthesize information; and
  2. note any qualities they believe would serve you well in future efforts to connect science to decision-making, especially in the context of complex environmental and resource problems.
