Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants
The Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, established at Monticello in 1987, collects, preserves, and distributes historic plant varieties and strives to promote greater appreciation for the origins and evolution of garden plants. The program centers on Thomas Jefferson’s horticultural interests and the plants he grew at Monticello, but covers the broad history of plants cultivated in America by including varieties documented through the nineteenth century, and choice North American plants, a group of special interest to Jefferson himself.

American Memory
American Memory (Library of Congress) provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience. It is a digital record of American history and creativity. The site includes periodicals, plans, photographs, and postcards related to the study of historic landscapes.
American Memory: Built In America Collection: HABS/HAER/HALS
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collections are among the largest and most heavily used in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Since 2000, documentation from the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) has been added to the holdings.
Archive of American Gardens (Smithsonian Institute)
The Archives of American Gardens (AAG) contains approximately 80,000 photographic images and records that document over 6,300 gardens throughout the United States. Images in the archives, which date from the late-nineteenth century to the present, highlight such features as garden furniture and ornamentation, fountains, sculptures, fences and gates, parterres, and garden structures. Designs represented range from large Italianate estates to herb and rose gardens, cottage and patio gardens, and community gardens.
The Art Institute of Chicago: Historic Architecture and Landscape Image Collection
The online Historic Architecture and Landscape Image Collection, a large collection of mounted photographic prints and lantern slides, provides valuable historic records of American architecture, landscape design, and urban planning.
Catena: Digital Archive of Historic Gardens + Landscapes
Sponsored by the Bard Graduate Center, Catena is an online archive of digital images with accompanying educational materials. The website’s purpose is to serve as an educational tool for teachers and scholars of landscape history affiliated with schools and universities.
Cultural Resource Management Journal
Cultural Resource Management Journal (CRM) is a scholarly journal for the preservation community. The publication carries articles, reports, and reviews of books, exhibits, websites, and other media related to the preservation field and of concern to diverse communities and resources in particular.
Historic Landscape Initiative, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)
DCR’s Historic Landscape Preservation programs have resulted in several publications that are available free of charge to the public. Publications cover a wide range of landscape preservation topics, such as mature tree care; protecting historic roads; preserving historic cemeteries; and reading the landscape.
Internet Archive

Texas CCC State Parks

The Center of Preservation Research (CoPR) is a university research center dedicated to the study, preservation and sustainable use of the built environment and cultural landscapes. As part of the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD), we focus on place, preservation, education, and research. Through education and scholarship, our exploration of the past for application in the present provides a basis for future sustainable preservation.
Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation
The Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation is a resource within the SUNY ESF Department of Landscape Architecture that supports the education of landscape architects as best stewards of the cultural environment. The Center works in partnership with the National Park Service’s Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and several other public and private organizations to advance expertise in preservation of our nation’s landscape heritage.
Goucher College
Founded in 1995 as the nation’s first limited-residency graduate program in Historic Preservation, our students have included long-time preservationists who wish to add to their knowledge, professionals in related fields who seek to specialize in historic preservation, as well as those who wish to change careers. Specifically designed for students who cannot, for family or professional reasons, attend traditional on-campus programs, courses are conducted electronically and by telecommunication during traditional fall and spring semesters. On-campus residency requirements are limited to two-week summer sessions.

Rutgers – Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies
The Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS) provides a unique opportunity in the region to study heritage preservation issues within local, national, and global contexts. Based in the Department of Art History, CHAPS offers both a Certificate in Historic Preservation, (15 credits), open to undergraduates and graduate students, and a Master of Cultural Heritage Preservation track (30 credits), open to students with a bachelors degree or its equivalent.
