Advisory Council on Historic Preservation
The mission of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is to promote the preservation, enhancement, and productive use of our nation’s historic resources, and advise the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy.

American Battlefield Protection Program
The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) promotes the preservation of significant historic battlefields associated with wars on American soil.  The ABPP focuses primarily on land use, cultural resource and site management planning, and public education.

Conservation Study Institute 
Collaborative conservation creates sustainable stewardship of national parks and other places of natural and cultural heritage through broad-based partnerships, community engagement, and cooperative leadership, to build a vision for the future.

Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) 
The mission of the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) is to record historic landscapes in the United States and its territories through measured and interpretive drawings, written histories, and large-format black and white photographs and color photographs.

National Historic Landmarks Program

National Register of Historic Places
The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archeological resources.

Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation
The Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation (OCLP) promotes the stewardship of significant landscapes through research, planning, and sustainable preservation maintenance.

Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation
The Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation is an inter-disciplinary professional organization which provides a forum for communication and exchange of information among its members. It is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of historic landscapes in all their variety, from formal gardens and public parks to rural expanses.

American Cultural Resource Association
The American Cultural Resource Associations’ mission is to promote the professional, ethical, and business practices of the cultural resources consulting industry.

American Public Gardens Association (APGA)
The APGA is committed to increasing the knowledge of public garden professionals throughout North America through information sharing, professional development, networking, public awareness, and research so they have the tools to effectively serve visitors and members.

American Planning Association

International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), Cultural Landscape Committee

National Council of State Historic Preservation Officers

National Trust for Historic Preservation

The Society for Commercial Archeology
The Society carries out projects of documentation, education, advocacy and conservation of historically significant 20th-century commercial built environments and cultural landscapes of North America, emphasizing the impact of the automobile and the commercial process.

The Society of Architectural Historians, Landscape History Chapter
The chapter encourages research and dissemination of research in landscape, gardening and horticultural history through publications, meetings, lectures, etc; provides a forum for the exchange of ideas related to these disciplines; promotes conservation, preservation, and recording of significant landscapes, and to cooperate with learned and professional societies in the pursuit of common objectives.

Southern Garden History Society

UNESCO World Heritage Convention
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection, and preservation of cultural patrimony and significant natural landscapes around the world. This Web site contains a searchable list of World Heritage sites, PDF files of World Heritage reports, and an interactive global map that provides access to descriptions of many World Heritage properties.

American Farmland Trust

The Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University
The arboretum supports world-class research, horticulture, and education programs that foster the understanding, appreciation, and preservation of trees.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF)

Preservation Action
Preservation Action is a 501c4 nonprofit organization created in 1974 to serve as the national grassroots lobby for historic preservation. Preservation Action seeks to

Recent Past Preservation Network
The Recent Past Preservation Network promotes preservation education, assistance, and activism through the medium of new technologies, to encourage a contextual understanding of our modern built environment.

National New Deal Preservation Association
A group of individuals, agencies, facilities and programs organized to promote the identification, documentation, preservation and education of people about the New Deal visual and performing arts, literature, crafts, structures and environmental projects.

Seed Savers Exchange
A non-profit organization dedicated to save North America’s diverse, but endangered, garden heritage for future generations by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people about the value of genetic and cultural diversity.

Scenic America
Scenic America is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to preserving and enhancing the visual character of America’s communities and countryside. Its work includes national advocacy efforts and technical assistance services, local and national projects, and the support of state affiliates.

Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants
The Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, established at Monticello in 1987, collects, preserves, and distributes historic plant varieties and strives to promote greater appreciation for the origins and evolution of garden plants. The program centers on Thomas Jefferson’s horticultural interests and the plants he grew at Monticello, but covers the broad history of plants cultivated in America by including varieties documented through the nineteenth century, and choice North American plants, a group of special interest to Jefferson himself.

The Trust for Public Land
The Trust for Public Land conserves land for people to enjoy as parks, gardens, and other natural places, ensuring livable communities for generations to come.

The Trustees of Reservations
The Trustees of Reservations preserve, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts.

ONLINE RESOURCES

American Memory 
American Memory (Library of Congress) provides free and open access through the Internet to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience. It is a digital record of American history and creativity.  The site includes periodicals, plans, photographs, and postcards related to the study of historic landscapes.

American Memory: Built In America Collection: HABS/HAER/HALS
The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) collections are among the largest and most heavily used in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress. Since 2000, documentation from the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS) has been added to the holdings.

Archive of American Gardens (Smithsonian Institute)
The Archives of American Gardens (AAG) contains approximately 80,000 photographic images and records that document over 6,300 gardens throughout the United States. Images in the archives, which date from the late-nineteenth century to the present, highlight such features as garden furniture and ornamentation, fountains, sculptures, fences and gates, parterres, and garden structures. Designs represented range from large Italianate estates to herb and rose gardens, cottage and patio gardens, and community gardens.

The Art Institute of Chicago: Historic Architecture and Landscape Image Collection
The online Historic Architecture and Landscape Image Collection, a large collection of mounted photographic prints and lantern slides, provides valuable historic records of American architecture, landscape design, and urban planning.

Catena: Digital Archive of Historic Gardens + Landscapes
Sponsored by the Bard Graduate Center, Catena is an online archive of digital images with accompanying educational materials.  The website’s purpose is to serve as an educational tool for teachers and scholars of landscape history affiliated with schools and universities.

Cultural Resource Management Journal
Cultural Resource Management Journal (CRM) is a scholarly journal for the preservation community.  The publication carries articles, reports, and reviews of books, exhibits, websites, and other media related to the preservation field and of concern to diverse communities and resources in particular.

Historic Landscape Initiative, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR)
DCR’s Historic Landscape Preservation programs have resulted in several publications that are available free of charge to the public.  Publications cover a wide range of landscape preservation topics, such as mature tree care; protecting historic roads; preserving historic cemeteries; and reading the landscape.

Internet Archive
The Internet Archive offers permanent access to historical collections that exist in digital format.  Intended for researchers, historians, scholars, people with disabilities, and the general public.  Holdings include a number of National Park Service cultural landscape reports and other NPS publications.

Living New Deal
A national database of thousands of documents, photographs, and personal stories about public works made possible by the New Deal.  Includes a list of additional New Deal websites.

Living Landscape Observer
To provide observations and information on the emerging fields of landscape scale conservation, heritage preservation, and sustainable community development.

National Historic Landmark Database
Provides access to National Historic District Landmark documentation.

National Register of Historic Places Database
Provides access to National Register of Historic Places documentation.

National Park Service History E-Library
On-line source for current and historic National Park Service Documents, including cultural landscape reports, historic resource studies, historic grounds reports, and landscape management plans.

Networking Guide to Historic Landscape Resources
This survey-based database was designed to inventory and manage information about the historic landscape resources of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta (now known as the American Public Gardens Association) members within North America.

Preservation Directory.com
PreservationDirectory.com is an online resource for historic preservation, building restoration and cultural resource management in the United States & Canada. Our goal is to foster the preservation of historic buildings, historic downtowns and neighborhoods, cultural resources and to promote heritage tourism by facilitating communication among historic preservation professionals and the general public.

Texas CCC State Parks
Provides visual access to CCC landscapes and structures located in 29 state parks in Texas.  Online resources include historic and contemporary photographs, CCC landscape and building plans, and oral histories.

What’s Out There
An easy-to-navigate database that includes over a thousand historic designed landscapes, with content created by academics, volunteers, and advocates.  The newly-created on-line resource will serve as a reference for students and teachers of design and history, professionals, and preservationists.

Site/Lines
Site/Lines is literary forum for essays and reviews of books, exhibitions, and designs dealing with landscape themes and projects. The publication covers the portrayal of landscape subjects in the fine arts, including the art of photography, as well as the practical disciplines of landscape architecture and landscape management.

View
View is an annual news magazine that profiles preservation successes inspired by books published by the Library of Landscape History.

SELECT EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

 Center for Preservation Research (CoPR)
The Center of Preservation Research (CoPR) is a university research center dedicated to the study, preservation and sustainable use of the built environment and cultural landscapes. As part of the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP) at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD), we focus on place, preservation, education, and research. Through education and scholarship, our exploration of the past for application in the present provides a basis for future sustainable preservation.

Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation
The Center for Cultural Landscape Preservation is a resource within the SUNY ESF Department of Landscape Architecture that supports the education of landscape architects as best stewards of the cultural environment. The Center works in partnership with the National Park Service’s Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and several other public and private organizations to advance expertise in preservation of our nation’s landscape heritage.

Goucher College 
Founded in 1995 as the nation’s first limited-residency graduate program in Historic Preservation, our students have included long-time preservationists who wish to add to their knowledge, professionals in related fields who seek to specialize in historic preservation, as well as those who wish to change careers. Specifically designed for students who cannot, for family or professional reasons, attend traditional on-campus programs, courses are conducted electronically and by telecommunication during traditional fall and spring semesters. On-campus residency requirements are limited to two-week summer sessions.

National Preservation Institute
The National Preservation Institute (NPI) is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization offering specialized information, continuing education, and professional training to those involved in the management, preservation, and stewardship of our cultural heritage.  NPI offers seminars in historic preservation and cultural resource management.

Rutgers – Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies
The Program in Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies (CHAPS) provides a unique opportunity in the region to study heritage preservation issues within local, national, and global contexts. Based in the Department of Art History, CHAPS  offers both a Certificate in Historic Preservation, (15 credits), open to undergraduates and graduate students, and a Master of Cultural Heritage Preservation track (30 credits), open to students with a bachelors degree or its equivalent.

Willowbank – Center for Cultural Landscape
The Centre for Cultural Landscape is a national and international centre for research, short courses, conferences, lecture series, and consulting services, related to the broad and emerging field of cultural landscape theory and practice. Willowbank has been a leader in this field for many years, and the Centre brings together its experience and expertise and makes them available to a wider audience.
