History

The Battalion is a part of a Regiment which holds one of the most illustrious battle records in the American Army. During three bloody wars on three continents the 3d Battalion has played a conspicuous part in the achievements of the 60th Infantry Regiment and the 9th Infantry Division. The Battalion was constituted May 1917 in the Regular Army as Company C, 60th Infantry. It was organized June 1917 at Gettysburg National Park, Pennsylvania during the outset of the First World War.

BATTALION NICKNAME: "RIVER RAIDERS"

The first joint operation by U.S. Army and U.S. Navy units, that were later to constitute the Mobile Riverine Force (MFR), was designated RIVER RAIDER I. The operation initiated on 16 February 1967 and terminated on 20 March 1967. This led to the AP BAC raids in April to deny the enemy ammunition and labor and resulted in the Battalion seeing some of the heaviest fighting in the region. Due to this demonstration of adaptability, maneuver and determination, the "River Raiders" motto originated for the Battalion. "River Raiders" is the official greeting of the Battalion.

The Battalion has been credited with six Medal of Honor recipients, four Campaign Participation Credits for WWI, eight WWII, eight Vietnam and four Presidential Unit Citations.
