Obtaining Social Security records on a deceased person

How do I get information about a deceased person from Social Security's records?

You can make your request online or in writing. We charge a fee to search our records even if we are unable to provide information to you. Please see the fee schedule below.

To Make Your Request Online

Use online Form SSA-711 to get the:

· Application for a Social Security Card (Form SS-5) of a deceased person; or

· Computer extract of the Social Security card application.

To Make Your Request in Writing

Send us your request in writing along with a check or money order payable to the Social Security Administration using the address and fee schedule below. Include:

· The person's Social Security number if you know it; or

· The person's full name, date and place of birth, and parents' names (including the mother's maiden name).

Our records are confidential and we do not disclose information about individuals unless they are deceased or we have their consent to disclose information to you. We began keeping records in 1936 and cannot search records of people born before 1865.

Fee Schedule

You also may request detailed earnings information for a deceased person under certain circumstances. Please see Form SSA-7050 for details, fees and evidence required.

$27-Search for the Form SS-5 using the person's Social Security number

$29-Search for the SS-5 application using the person's identifying information

$14-Search for a claims file using the person's Social Security number (Claims files are usually destroyed within a few years of the final decision on a claim.)

10 cents-Cost per page for photocopying material from the claim file

We determine the actual cost for postage once we have retrieved the information. We accept the following credit card payments at our secure website:
