School Curriculum and Instruction

Curriculum

A school's curriculum is the written plan outlining what students will be taught. In a standards-based system like ours, the curriculum is aligned to our academic standards. DoDEA has developed rigorous and demanding curriculum standards to ensure we achieve our education goals.

Extra Educational Support Resource Programs

It is the philosophy of BES and DoDEA that all students should participate in regular classroom activities to the largest extent possible. Our resource teachers collaborate with the regular education teachers, and sometimes teach within the regular classroom, but also select students for small group and/or individual remediation or enrichment as needed.

Language Arts and Reading Specialist (LARS)
The Language Arts and Reading Specialists manage and coordinate the school-wide reading program. They also assess and instruct students who could benefit from a long-term remedial or corrective reading program. This instruction is designed to supplement (not replace) classroom-reading lessons.
Read 180
READ 180 is an intensive reading intervention for children who read below the expected level of proficiency. The program directly addresses individual needs through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading skills.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The ESL teachers identify students from Kindergarten through 5th grade with limited or no English language proficiency. The ESL program does not discourage the use of a child's native language, but encourages the use of English by providing activities which promote listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. More about the DoDEA ESL Program.
Gifted Education Program
The Gifted program provides opportunities for students to participate in various enrichment activities during the school year. Our teachers are committed to developing school wide enrichment opportunities for students, and feel that the unique worth, abilities, and dignity of every student should be recognized and cultivated. The cooperation and the exchange of talents among BES faculty and staff, and support from a variety of community members, enrich and deepen the education we offer and make our school an enjoyable and challenging place for learning. Contact our Gifted Teacher for more detailed information concerning screening and eligibility. As per DoDEA Gifted Education Program Guide, “The progress of students receiving gifted education services is to be reviewed annually by the Gifted Review Committee. The review is generally completed at the end of the school year to document eligibility for the upcoming school year.” Fifth grade students moving to middle school are reviewed for eligibility for the services offered at that level.
