Transportation and Parking

"Washington suffers from the worst traffic congestion in the nation, with drivers spending more than three days out of every 365 caught in traffic. Helped along by a relatively robust economy, the Washington region forged well ahead of perennial rivals Chicago and Los Angeles, which ranked second and third in an extensive study conducted annually by a research group at Texas A&M University."

- Washington Post, September 27, 2011

In light of the National Capitol Region's well-earned traffic and parking reputation, it's important to find alternatives that will provide you with viable alternatives to driving. Fortunately, you will find a number of practical (and affordable) ways of commuting.

In case you've set your heart on driving, you'll also receive driving and parking information at the Pentagon, the Naval Support Facility Arlington, and Marine Corps Base Quantico. For other duty assignments, please consult your Supervisor.

Mass Transportation Benefit Program

Smart BenefitsThe MTBP System was developed to allow DoD federal employees and military members in the National Capital Region (NCR) the ability to apply for federally subsidized mass transportation benefits (currently limited to $125 per month) using the Web. This user guide is intended for DoD employees who want to enroll, recertify, change or withdraw from the Mass Transportation Benefit Program using the web based system.

All military members and civilian employees who have a Common Access Card (CAC) and access to a DoD CAC-enabled system are required to use this system to apply and participate in the Mass Transportation Benefit Program.

The MTBP links directly to the WMATA SmartTrip card program. You must obtain and register Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) (Metro) SmarTrip® card prior to enrolling in MTBP. The card must be registered with the same first and last name as your Department of Defense (DoD) Common Access Card (CAC).

Click on the buttons to your right to access the various aspects of the MTBP System:

  • To see if your chosen mode of transportation is covered by the MTBP System, click on "MTBP Services" to find the transportation method and how your MTBP benefit is applied

Slug Lines

What is Slugging?

"Slugging" is a term used to describe a unique form of commuting found in the Washington, DC area sometimes referred to as "Instant Carpooling" or "Casual Carpooling". It's unique because people commuting into the city stop to pickup other passengers even though they are total strangers! However, slugging is a very organized system with its own set of rules, proper etiquette, and specific pickup and drop-off locations. It has thousands of vehicles at its disposal, moves thousands of commuters daily, and the best part, it’s FREE! Not only is it free, but it gets people to and from work faster than the typical bus, metro, or train. I think you'll find that it is the most efficient, cost-effective form of commuting in the nation.

You can find more information about slugging to/from the Pentagon, please click on the "Slugging" button to your right.
