COLONEL MICHAEL R. BELL

COL Bell has served in a wide variety of leadership, medical, and academic roles during his military career. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery in the U.S. Army Reserve upon graduation from the University of Alabama in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he attended the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sill, OK. In his first assignments, he served as the Assistant Logistics Officer (S4) for the 41st Field Artillery Brigade and as a Fire Direction Officer, Platoon Leader, and Intelligence Officer for the 4th Battalion, 77th Field Artillery in Babenhausen, Germany.
After returning from Germany in 1989, COL Bell branch transferred to Military Intelligence and completed the Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course at Fort Huachuca, AZ. He was subsequently assigned to Fort Stewart, GA where he served as the Assistant Intelligence Plans Officer for the 24th Infantry Division and as the intelligence officer (S2) for the 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Upon redeployment from Desert Storm, COL Bell left active duty to pursue his interest in medicine. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Syracuse University in 1993 and then returned to the Army at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS), where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1997. He completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the Madigan Army Medical Center in 1998 and his Master of Public Health Degree and Residency in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at USUHS in 2002.
COL Bell’s assignments include Officer In Charge, Troop Medical Clinic #5, Fort Lewis, WA; Chief, Primary Care Clinic, Andrew Rader U.S. Army Health Clinic, Fort Myer, VA; Program Manager, Occupational Medicine, U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD; OIC, Mobile Medical Training Team, Coalition Joint Task Force 180, Kabul, Afghanistan; Command Surgeon, U.S. Army Chemical Materials Agency, APG, MD; Brigade Surgeon, Warrior Transition Brigade, Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC; Program Manager, Behavioral and Social Health Outcomes Program, U.S. Army Public Health Command, APG, MD; and Associate Director, Occupational and Environmental Medicine Residency Program, USUHS. COL Bell is Board-Certified in Occupational and Environmental Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics at USUHS.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (5 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal, and the Order of St. Barbara.
