The tongue is an amazing organ.

Thousands of nerve fibers in it help us eat, drink and swallow. Without them, we would not taste. The tongue helps us speak. Quietly, its surface defends our bodies from germs.

Yet for everything the tongue can do, perhaps one of its most exciting roles is to serve as a direct “gateway” to the brain through thousands of nerve endings.

Alpha Company at Fort Detrick began its existence as the first Satellite Operation Center in 1982. Since then, the Archangels (Alpha) have led the 53rd Signal Battalion (Satellite Control) in several technological advancements to better serve the United States Military in the ever-increasing need for satellite communications.

Fort Detrick Celebrates Black History Month
The Fort Detrick community gathered at the Community Activities Center Feb. 13 for the annual Black History Month Celebration, this year hosted by the 21st Signal Brigade. The theme of this year’s event was, “Remembering Our Past While Shaping Our Future,” and several special guests were in attendance.

The year would see the battles of Chancellorsville and Chattanooga, among many others. It also brought the Battle of Gettysburg – one of the most pivotal battles of the Civil War.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a federal holiday for each one of the American presidents’ birthdays? There would be 44 federal holidays, just for birthdays—not to mention the other holidays such as Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works—there is one holiday to recognize all 44 presidents of the United States, which we know as Presidents’ Day.
