Women Offenders: Developing an Agencywide Approach

Apr. 23, 2013 - Apr. 25, 2013--This revised blended learning program, with combined independent and on-site activities will total approximately 40 hours over the course of a year. Incorporated into the course requirements are Blended-learning activities to include a webinar, an organizational readiness survey, independent reading and personalized coaching throughout the year to assist agencies in directing their planned change. On-site activities include a 2.5 day, in-class training at the National Corrections Academy in Aurora, Colorado.

Overview

Each member of an agency team must participate in the March 12, 2013 webinar and will be expected to have completed the assignments in preparation for the in-class event in April. Participants who know they will not be able to participate in the scheduled webinar may not be eligible for the in-class event. As individual participants will bring with them various levels of experience and knowledge about managing justice involved women, the webinar and readings will provide necessary background information to fully participate in this training event.

The training will lead participant teams through strategic planning to develop an agency plan that provides coordination and direction to systemically enhance management of justice involved women. At the completion of the 2.5 in-class training, agency teams will create an action plan to guide the development of agency policies and procedures, to ensure that responsive and effective services are provided to meet the case management and programming needs of women.

Goal of the Training: Agencies and jurisdictions will use gender-informed, evidence-based knowledge as a foundation to advance systemic changes to improve outcomes for women offenders. Identified outcomes for women offenders can include, but are not limited to; risk and harm reduction, reduced recidivism rates, family reunification, improved self-efficiency/efficacy, effective community stabilization, and successful reintegration/re-entry.

Audience

Who Should Attend: Administrators, policymakers, individuals with oversight/management of women’s prisons and jails, as well as community supervision agencies. This blended-learning offering is for three-person teams representing central office, jails, prisons, community supervision corrections or combined agencies that will commit to developing an agency-wide plan for an effective response to women offenders. Teams must include an agency administrator with authority to direct resources to effect the planned changes in policy and practice and two managers who are responsible for implementation. Only teams that can make a one year commitment to this training process are eligible.
