Command Sponsorship

Fort Richardson is considered an overseas assignment. If you have dependents and you want your family members to accompany you, your orders must say “concurrent travel” and have each family member’s name on your orders. Each family member must have a Family Member screening and have Command Sponsorship.

If your PCS orders say “deferred travel” for your family, then you need to travel to Alaska alone. After you arrive you can begin the Command Sponsorship process. Have your family complete the Exceptional Family Member screening at their current duty station/community. The required documents are available from your S-1 at your gaining unit or through the Military Personnel Division (MPD), Command Sponsorship Office, 907-384-1024. Service members requesting command sponsorship must have their family members screened for enrollment in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). Screening ensures that any specialized medical or educational needs can be met at Fort Richardson or in the neighboring community. During the EFMP screening process, the Army Medical Activity will identify any special medical needs for family members to ensure those services are available through military medical facilities or local Tri-Care providers. The screening process should be initiated at the current duty station 3 to 6 months prior to the permanent change of station move. For more information, you can inquire with your current Military Personnel Division, local Army Community Service Manager, or call the Fort Richardson’s ACS EFMP Manager at 907-384-0225.
