CISE REU Supplement
CISE Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Supplement processing for fiscal year 2013 will occur later in the cycle than it has in previous years. We anticipate supporting these requests at similar levels and in similar numbers as in previous years. CISE will provide more information regarding this funding opportunity no later than March 1, 2013. The target date for receiving REU Supplement requests will be moved to April 1 rather than March 1. New Dear Colleague Letters
Two new Dear Colleage Letters were recently made available. 1) SaTC EAGERs Enabling New Collaborations Between Computer and Social Scientists (NSF 13-037). NSF expects to fund a small number of Early Concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGERs) in Secure and Trustworthy Cyberspace (SaTC). We are particularly interested in using EAGERs to encourage novel interdisciplinary research resulting from new collaborations between one or more CISE researchers and one or more SBE researchers. More...... 2) NSF-FHWA Coordination on Cyber Physical Systems for Highway Transportation (NSF 13-034). NSF and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have a shared interest in advancing basic and applied research in Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), which are systems in which physical processes are tightly intertwined with networked computing. CyberSEES Webinar
CyberSEES (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=504829), part of NSF's Science, Engineering, and Education for Sustainability (SEES; http://www.nsf.gov/sees/) portfolio, aims to advance interdisciplinary research in which the science and engineering of sustainability are enabled by new advances in computing, and where computational innovation is grounded in the context of sustainability problems. CyberSEES is open to a wide range of sustainability challenges and interdisciplinary approaches; and aims to advance computing and information sciences research and infrastructure in tandem with other disciplines. Proposals are expected to forge interdisciplinary collaborations among the computer and information sciences, social and natural sciences, mathematical sciences, engineering, and associated cyberinfrastructure to address challenging sustainability problems. The webinar, held on 11/19/12, covered the goals of the SEES initiative, the CyberSEES program scope and requirements, and other SEES funding opportunities relevant to the CISE community. US Ignite at NSF
NSF will serve as the lead federal agency for a White House Initiative called US Ignite, which aims to promote U.S. leadership in the development and deployment of next-generation applications and services with societal impact on ultra-fast, programmable networks. NSF will expand and leverage its investments in the Global Environment for Networking Innovation (GENI) project. GENI, a programmable virtual laboratory or testbed for Internet-scale networking experimentation, sets the technical groundwork for US Ignite. NSF is also encouraging the development of novel, next-generation applications and services that take advantage of these advanced testbeds and have potential for significant societal impact: see the Dear Colleague Letter (http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=nsf12085) and Mozilla Ignite (https://mozillaignite.org) for more information.
