Introduction to PM and the PM CoP

Topic
Long Description

Introduction to PM:

Acquisition professionals in the Program Management career field are concerned with all of the functions of a Program Management Office (PMO) or a Program Executive Office (PEO). Program management professionals serve in a wide range of PMO and PEO positions, including program integrators and analysts, program managers, program executive officers, and their deputies. They may also serve in a number of support and management positions throughout the workforce. The fundamental responsibilities of the program manager are to balance the many factors that influence cost, schedule, and performance; to interpret and tailor the DoD 5000 Series regulations; and to ensure that high quality, affordable, supportable, and effective defense systems are delivered to the warfighter as quickly as possible.

To locate information related to PM training, certification, and learning, go to the Training Center located in the Program Management Community of Practice ( PM CoP).  If you are hunting for PM related content, go to the Library View of the PM CoP and look for your topic of interest or go to any of the other topics show on the PM CoP home page or listed below.

Introduction to the PM CoP:

Attention all Program Managers.  Have you ever struggled to find the latest DoD, Army, Navy, or Air Force policy document?  Have you ever wanted to get answers to your acquisition questions?  Have you ever tried to make contact and collaborate with other acquisition professionals?

The PM CoP is one of 52 Communites located on the Acquisition Community Connection (ACC) web site.  The ACC is managed by a group of Knowledge Project Officers and technical staff located at the Defense Acquisition University at Fort Belvoir, VA. The success and quality of each Community depends on Subject Matter Experts (Government and Industry) that contribute content and manage topics on each site.  In short, the Communities are run by the community!

More Resources for the Program Manager:

In addition to the PM CoP, support is available today on the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) Website at www.dau.mil.  DAU is the DoD schoolhouse for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistic Workforce (AT&L).  The AT&L Workforce consist of Program Managers and many other functional career areas to include contracting, systems engineering, logistics, software management, budgeting and financial management, test and evaluation, manufacturing and QA, etc.  From the DAU Website, you can sign up for certification courses and short courses.  You can also access many other significant knowledge sharing websites from the DAU homepage.

The Defense Acquisition Portal has links to all of the DoD and service/agency acquisition policies at https://dap.dau.mil.  Or you can network and collaborate with other acquisition professionals on the Acquisition Community Connection (ACC) at https://acc.dau.mil. Here you can join one of many Communities of Practice (CoPs) or Special Interest Areas (SIAs) and stay abreast of what's going on in acquisition.

Located at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the Defense Systems Management College (DSMC) is chartered to provide executive-level courses, international program management courses, requirements management training, consulting, acquisition leadership training, and research to the DoD Acquisition Technology & Logistics (AT&L) workforce across the globe. http://www.dau.mil/sites/locations/dsmc/default.aspx
