Ames has won a number of national awards and recognitions as one of the countries best small cities, including Number 9 on Money Magazine's Best Places to Live (2010) and 100 Best Communities for Young People (2010).

In addition to Ames Laboratory and Iowa State University, Ames is also the home of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Animal Disease Center and National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, as well as the Iowa Department of Transportation.
