Georgia Law to host the Supreme Court of Georgia

Georgia Law will host the Supreme Court of Georgia on the afternoon of Jan. 16 in its Hatton Lovejoy Courtroom as the court hears oral arguments on a criminal death penalty case and a civil medical malpractice case. The justices normally convene at the State Judicial Building in Atlanta but conduct one or two special sessions outside the state’s capital each year. Registration is required for attendance.

Georgia Law’s student-edited legal journal, the Georgia Law Review, will present “Evidence Reform: Turning a Grotesque Structure into a Rational Edifice?” on Jan. 18 in the Larry Walker Room of Dean Rusk Hall. During this daylong symposium, evidence scholars from across the country will discuss Georgia’s new evidence code and will reflect upon the nation-wide evidence reform movement as a whole. Woodruff Chair in International Law Diane Marie Amann was recently appointed by Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda as the Special Adviser on Children in and Affected by Armed Conflict for the International Criminal Court. In this role, she will support and advise on Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) policies, training and awareness with regard to children in and affected by armed conflict.

January 28, 2013 - 4:30pm

International scholar Nikolay Koposov, a visiting professor of history at Johns Hopkins University, will discuss the phenomenon of laws that regulate historical truth and the highly politicized “memory wars” they have engendered. The term “memory laws” refers to anti-fascist legislation aimed at preventing a resurgence of fascism after World War II as well as laws criminalizing denial of historical events (such as the Holocaust) or creating revisionist national narratives.

 

Dean Rusk Center

The Dean Rusk Center was established in 1977 to expand the scope of international law and policy initiatives at the University of  Georgia School of Law. Today, the Rusk Center, which is housed in Rusk Hall on UGA’s North Campus, provides a forum for collaboration and debate on issues of global importance, administers international education programs, and sponsors law school outreach to diverse partners around the world.
