Carey N. Gordon

Carey N. Gordon was sworn in as the first USAID representative to the Kyrgyz Republic in May 2011. In his position as USAID representative, Gordon leads a dynamic program to strengthen democracy, build economic growth, improve social services and work to mitigate conflict in conjunction with the Kyrgyz Government, local community groups and other donors.  The USAID/Kyrgyzstan Representative Office continues its assistance in response to unrest in the South of the country, and in programs throughout the country, emphasizes better governance, increasing opportunities for youth, and fostering anti-corruption efforts.

Gordon joined USAID in 1986 and served in USAID missions in Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, Ivory Coast, Cambodia, and Thailand.  In his last assignment, he served as deputy mission director in Bangladesh. 

Prior to his work at USAID, Gordon worked for seven years as a practicing trial attorney in Cleveland, Ohio.  He received his J.D. cum laude from the Cleveland State University; an M.A. degree in Far Eastern Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London; and a B.A. degree in history from the Ohio State University.  He also spent a year at Cambridge University studying Chinese.
