Apply for SSN for a child living outside the United States

How do I apply for a Social Security number (SSN) for a child who lives outside the United States?

If your child lives outside the United States, we can assign the child an SSN if the child is a U.S. citizen or a noncitizen lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Otherwise, we can assign the child a number only if am SSN is required by law as a condition of receiving a federally funded benefit.
