ANNOTATION: “This review juxtaposes several themes across more than three decades in an effort to highlight consensus in the published literature regarding factors that might influence offender behaviour. To reduce the occurrence of misconducts and violence in prisons, various strategies have been explored. Contingency management programs in the form of individual and systemic incentives are the focus of this discussion, with examples drawn from both correctional and non-correctional settings” (p. 1). Sections of this report following an abstract include: introduction; literature search strategies; institutional misconduct; pharmacological strategies; use of incentive schemes in correctional settings; contingency management (CM) in drug and alcohol treatment; CM in mentally disordered and low functioning populations; individual differences in sensitivity to incentives; role of the date of publication; and conclusion. The effectiveness of incentive treatment programs is inconclusive.
