The Hanford Site is a very unique place offering a number of tours for members of the public, elected officials and their staffs, tribal officials, stakeholders, and others. Hanford Site Public Tours

The Hanford Public Tour Program These tours are available to members of the public who are at least 18 years old and are United States citizens. Each tour lasts approximately five hours and takes visitors throughout all areas of Hanford. A Hanford employee goes on each tour providing history and information about the facilities and projects along the route.

Tours of Hanford’s Historic B Reactor
The B Reactor is a National Historic Landmark giving visitors the chance to walk through the world’s first full-scale nuclear reactor. This facility produced the plutonium for the “Fat Man” bomb which was dropped over Nagasaki, Japan in August of 1945, and helped to end World War II. This is approximately a four and a half hour (4.5) tour, with about two hours allocated for touring the B Reactor itself. Participants must be at least 12 years old.

Hanford Tours for Native American Tribal Leaders
The Department of Energy has a government to government working relationship with the Nez Perce, Umatilla, Wanapum, and Yakama Tribal Nations. Tour agendas are developed to provide tribal officials with visits which address specific areas of interest.

Private Tours of Hanford
A limited number of private tours of Hanford are available to agencies, organizations, and individuals whose work scope directly involves activities associated with Site cleanup. Each tour request is evaluated individually to determine if the requesting group satisfies that criteria. Due to the high volume of requests for private Site tours that are received each year we are unable to accommodate every request that is received.

Media Tours of Hanford
It is important that reporters understand the complex mission of Hanford cleanup, as well as the activities that took place during Hanford’s plutonium production mission which generated the wastes that are being cleaned up today. A number of media relations officials are on staff at Hanford to assist reporters in covering stories at the Site, as well as to provide tours of the various facilities.
