Karin Lohman, Ph.D.

Director, Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation

Karin Lohman, Ph.D., is the Director of NCCAM’s Office of Policy, Planning, and Evaluation. Dr. Lohman is responsible for the policy, planning, evaluation, and reporting functions for NCCAM’s scientific initiatives and programs. She advises the NCCAM director on matters of policy and planning and leads a team that, among its many activities, prepares congressional testimony, responds to congressional inquiries, and oversees the implementation of the Freedom of Information Act.

Dr. Lohman earned her B.S. in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Lohman joined NIH in 2002 as the Special Assistant for Scientific Affairs in the Office of Policy Analysis at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). While at NIAID, she also served as the Acting Chief of the Strategic Planning and Evaluation Branch where she oversaw trans-NIAID strategic and science planning, program evaluation, and policy coordination. Additionally, she served as the Acting Director for the Freedom of Information Act Office. Prior to joining NCCAM, Dr. Lohman was a Health Science Administrator at the NIH Office of AIDS Research, where she coordinated the development of a variety of planning and evaluation activities including the annual Trans-NIH Plan for HIV-Related Research.

Prior to joining the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Lohman was a research biologist at DuPont Agricultural Products, where she conducted research to identify and validate potential herbicide targets. In addition, Dr. Lohman was a Congressional Science Policy Fellow and later a professional staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science.

Dr. Lohman has received several NIAID awards in recognition of her contributions in planning and evaluation. She also received two NIH Director’s Award in recognition of her efforts in the development of the NIH Strategic Plan and Research Agenda for Development of Countermeasures Against Chemical Threats and the development of the Biennial Report of the Director, National Institutes of Health, Fiscal Years 2006 & 2007. Dr. Lohman is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has co-authored scientific publications and holds several patents.
