ANNOTATION: Families need all the support available when dealing with the death of a loved one. The Public Safety Officers’ Benefits (PSOB) program is an often overlooked resource for “eligible survivors of public safety officers whose deaths are the direct and proximate result of traumatic injury sustained in the line of duty or certain eligible heart attacks or strokes.” PSOB Act might also be referred to as the Hometown Heroes Survivors’ Benefits Act. Public safety officers are federal, state, and local law enforcement officers, fire-fighters, public rescue squads, ambulance crews, and chaplains of these departments. The PSOB program also provides disability benefits for qualified public safety officers and financial assistance for higher education to qualified spouses and children of deceased or disabled public safety officers.
