Puritan Tiger Beetle
(Cicindela puritana)

Recently, a Steering Committee comprised of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Calvert county, and other state and federal agencies developed a report entitled, Chesapeake Bay Cliff Erosion in Calvert County.

The report describes short, medium, and long-term potential solutions for addressing cliff erosion in Calvert county.  One of the medium-term solutions is to allow some loss of Puritan tiger beetle habitat to occur through a project review process [applicant summary document and applicant checklist] developed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The project review process will enable some landowners to obtain a permit for shoreline erosion control structures, however, it will require mitigation to offset the loss of Puritan tiger beetle habitat.
