02/20/2013 -- Military service members, their families and Department of Defense personnel seeking educational and job opportunities may want to attend the Career and Education Fair in Building 7120 Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The Career and Education Fair is hosted by Marine and Family Programs.
“This event is to help veterans and military personnel obtain employment and educational information and resources,” Robin Gray, personal and professional development instructor, Marine and Family Programs, said.
“It is an event to connect skilled veterans with employers with open positions as a part of the nationwide Hiring our Heroes effort launched in 2011,” she added.
According to Gray, employers and colleges showcase their organizations at the fair to help people seeking jobs make connections and have an opportunity to ask questions as well as receive valuable information.
“We hope participants will take away answers to their questions, college applications, potential job leads and make valuable connections for future employment,” Gray said.
About 25 employers’ and colleges’ tables will be set up. Each business, college and university has been chosen to participate based on their affiliations with the military and MCLB Albany, she noted.
Some of the participants of this event include: Booz Allen Hamilton, Defense Commissary Agency, Georgia Department of Labor, Albany State University, American Military University, University of Phoenix and Troy University.
Gray recommended participants follow the below tips to prepare for the fair:
* Arrive early
* Wear comfortable shoes
* Dress professionally
* Bring resumes
* Prepare a “one-minute commercial”
* Be prepared to discuss career goals
* Talk to others
* Be assertive and show initiative
* Be enthusiastic
* Remain calm
* Explore options
“Attending the Career and Education Fair will give a service member a chance to meet with representatives from a variety of companies and schools at one location,” Gray said. “This event is a great opportunity for veterans to really interact and have that dialogue about where that veteran may want to take (his or her) career post-military.”
