Consumer prices in the San Diego metropolitan area decreased by 0.6 percent from last year and decreased 0.5 percent during the first half of 2009 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Regional Commissioner Richard J. Holden remarked that the significant drop in the transportation index contributed to an overall decrease in the all annual items index.

The transportation index fell by 13.7 percent for the year and 9.8 percent for the past six months. Overall, gasoline prices were lower by 35.9 percent since the first half of 2008 and 28.1 percent since the second half of 2008.

Housing prices were up 2.5 percent for the year. Annual prices for fuels and utilities rose by 16.6 percent over the year and 8.5 percent over the past six months. Household furnishings and operations also saw increases of 2.8 percent for the year and 0.9 percent for the past six months.

Prices paid for food and beverages rose 2.7 percent over the course of the year. During this period, both the food at home and the food away from home indexes made gains of 2.7 and 2.5 percent, respectively. Increases in the food and beverage index also occurred over the past six months, as prices advanced 0.5 percent. The food at home component decreased 0.8 percent for the past six months, while food away from home increased 1.5 percent. Prices of alcoholic beverages increased by 4.9 percent for the year and increased 3.3 percent since the second half of 2008.

Medical care prices rose 2.0 percent for the past twelve months and 1.3 percent for the past six months.

Apparel prices reported a decline of 1.9 percent for the year, but showed a 1.9 percent increase since the second half of 2008. Yearly prices for recreation increased slightly at 0.1 percent, but dipped 0.2 percent in the past six months.

Education and communication prices advanced 1.9 percent during the past year and continued to climb at 2.9 percent during the past six months. Other goods and services increased 6.4 percent on an annual basis and 4.9 percent on a semi-annual basis.

The San Diego area’s Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) advanced to 240.885 (1982-84=100) during the first half of 2009. Therefore, a market basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in 1982-84 would have cost $240.89 in the first six months of 2009. Local area CPI data are not seasonally adjusted.
