ANNOTATION: “The purpose of this administrative regulation (AR) is to outline the scope of gynecological and obstetrical services, medical consultations, and necessary medical treatment that may be provided to female offenders. The Department of Corrections will provide counseling and assistance to pregnant offenders in keeping with their expressed desires in planning for their unborn children” (p. 1). Procedures cover: pregnancy--management specifics, pregnancy screening, medical release form, childbirth arrangement, protective services, visits of supporting outside agencies, Custody/Control manager/supervisor responsibilities, and custody management outside facility; birth control; abortion—personal decision making about abortion, non-use of public funds, contact with private health care provider, no forcing DOC employees or contract workers to participate in abortion facilitation or planning, and getting outside agency help in decision making; and postpartum issues—possible restriction of contact between mother and infant, no allowance for newborn children in the facility with the mother, bringing of child for visitation by parent or legal guardian, and provision of adoption information.
