LAYOUT OF FTBF

The Fermilab Test Beam Facility is located on the West side of Meson Detector Building. The MTest and MCenter beam lines enter the building from the south, and while the MCenter line passes through the entirety of the building (dividing in into East and West), the MTest line comes to completion within the building. The facility was designed for the constant occupation of multiple users.

Tools, Cables & Patch Panels

Assorted hand tools are stored in the MT6.2 enclosure for experimenter use. Please return tools to the board, as the facility can not afford to replace tools. For information about power tools including drill press and band saw see Tech Areas.

Signal (lemo & BNC), SHV, Network (CAT5), and other assorted cables are available to users in various lengths and quantities. For Power cables see below. Single cables are hung, by length, in the MT6.2 enclosure. Bundles of 10 cables are available from the FTBF coordinator. Users are asked to adhere to the following rules when using cables:

FTBF Kitchenette
  • Separate and coil cables at end of running period
  • Return all cables and store neatly
  • Do not attach adhesive labels to cables, use provided tags
  • Do Not remove permanent cable ID labels
  • If you find something wrong with a cable, tag it and inform the FTBF Coordinator

Signal, SHV, and network patch panels are installed in the enclosures and control rooms, so users should not have to run cables between these areas themselves.

Lengths between signal patch panels are:

  • 2A: 188 - 194 nsec
  • 2B: 148 - 152 nsec
  • 2C: 138 - 146 nsec
  • 2D: 158 or 176 nsec
  • 1A: 144 - 150 nsec
  • 1B: 100 or 102 nsec
  • ALC: 318 nsec

Helium Tubes

A make-shift beamline can be installed and filled with Helium gas to reduce beam scattering in air. Available only upon request. 48 hour set-up time.

Alignment Lasers

The beam enclosures have a system of lasers installed so users can determine the exact location of the beam (x and y planes), and setup their apparatus accordingly.

Power Cords & Adapters

Power cords, multi-outlets, and surge protectors may be used one at a time, in accordance with ES&H Guidelines, and are available to users. A few adapters, converters and transformers to convert between some european and American electronics are availble by special request from the FTBF Coordinator. If your experiment requires the use of an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) that can also be arranged for by the FTBF Coordinator.
