Pleasant Valley High School of Bettendorf defeated Dubuque Wahlert High School (Dubuque, IA) 74-44 to capture the 2013 Ames Laboratory/Iowa State University Regional High School Science Bowl on Jan. 26. Pleasant Valley, which lost only one match all day in the morning qualifying round, advances to the Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, April 25-29 in Washington, D.C.

BBC News technology reporter Katia Moskvitch writes about the announcement by the U.S. Department of Energy to locate a $120 Innovation Hub for Critical Materials at the Ames Laboratory. The Critical Materials Institute will be a partnership of four national laboratories, seven research universities and seven industrial partners charged with finding ways to reduce the criticality of rare earth materials used in most new technologies.

A group of researchers led by Edward Yu, Ames Lab and Iowa State University scientist, has discovered the mechanism that allows drug resistant tuberculosis to defy treatment. The findings, published in the journal by the journal Nucleic Acids Research, a research team led by Yu describes the structure of a regulator that controls the expression of the multidrug efflux pump in Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
