Following graduation from the Armor Officer Basic Course, Brig. Gen. Paul E. Funk II was assigned as an Armored Cavalry Platoon Leader in the 2d Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood, TX, where he later served as the Company Executive Officer and then as battalion S3.

Immediately upon graduation from the Armor Officer Advanced Course, Brig. Gen. Funk was assigned to Kirchgoens, Germany with the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Armor Brigade where he commanded A Company and 4th Battalion, 67th Armor Brigade Headquarters and Headquarters Company. The latter assignment included deployment to Southwest Asia as part of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm with 3rd Armored Division (Spearhead).

Upon returning to the United States, Brig. Gen. Funk served as an observer controller with the Live Fire Team (Dragons) at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, CA, before attending the US Army Command and General Staff College. Upon graduation from CGSC, Brig. Gen. Funk was assigned as the Squadron Operations Officer at the 1st Squadron, 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson, CO. He then served as the Regimental Operations Officer.

Following his service with the 3d ACR, he served as the chief of the Exercise Division at U.S. Space Command at Peterson AFB, CO. Brig. Gen. Funk then returned to Fort Hood and the First Team in 2000, assuming command of the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment (GARRYOWEN).

He subsequently served as the 1st Cavalry Division G3 for more than two years both at Fort Hood and in Iraq prior to departing in the summer of 2004 to participate in a fellowship program at the Institute for Advanced Technology, the University of Texas.

On 12 July 2005, Brig. Gen. Funk assumed command of the 1st Brigade Combat Team (IRONHORSE), 1st Cavalry Division. While in command of the IRONHORSE Brigade, he deployed for 15 months to Iraq in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM 06-08.

On 25 April 2008, he relinquished command of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, and immediately assumed duties as the III Corps Chief of Staff on Fort Hood. On 17 April 2009, he assumed responsibility as the Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Arms Center for Training at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

On 5 July 2011, Brig. Gen. Funk assumed the role of Deputy Commanding General for Maneuver, 1st Infantry Division.

Brig. Gen. Funk�s awards and decorations include three awards of the Legion of Merit, three awards of the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, five awards of the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, the Defense of Saudi Arabia Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation. Brig. Gen. Funk has a Bachelor�s degree in Speech Communications from Montana State University.
