The Research Library has access to hundreds of bibliographic and full-text databases from both technical and non-technical fields that are not available to the casual searcher. These databases can provide access to the most current and comprehensive journal and newspaper articles, reports, books, newsletters, conference papers, patents, and dissertations. Many full-text wire stories, newspaper, newsletters, and journal articles can also be retrieved. In addition to our many online resources, the Research Library houses hundreds of volumes of indexes and reference materials which librarians can access to assist customers.

How do I request a research consultation?

Requests may be submitted only by Los Alamos National Laboratory personnel:
  • at the Library Service Desk on the Main Level of the Research Library
  • by telephone: 667-5809
  • by fax: 665-2948
  • by mail to Mail Stop P362
  • by e-mail to library@lanl.gov
  • by our Web-based Request Form.
Please provide the following information to maximize the usefulness of the requests:
  • a brief statement of your request
  • period of time to be searched
  • format of results (citations only, including abstracts, or full-text when available)
  • any relevant references to your topic
  • language restrictions for the search
  • information on yourself, including name, z-number, group, mail stop, phone number, and cost center and program code
  • date needed by and method of delivery of results (paper, disc, email)
  • cost code, program code, and account code

Is there a fee for this service?

The LANL Research Library does not recharge hourly work done by library staff for LANL customers. However, computer connect time and printing/downloading (if used) will be charged to your cost center and program code. Costs vary by database and number and format of results received. You can generally expect the price to be between $50 and $100, although extensive searches can be considerably more expensive.

How long does it take?

Most consultations are done in the order received and the results usually available within 48 hours. Simple requests such as verification of a reference or a brief listing of an author's publications may be done while you wait. Picking up requests, faxing, or receiving the results via electronic mail avoids mail delays.

What if I want more information?

After you receive your results, you can request the hard copies of items by sending the printout to the Library, Mail Stop P362 with the desired references marked or by e-mailing the list to library@lanl.gov. The journal articles or books owned by the library will be sent to your address. There is no charge for this copying and loaning service as long as the LANL Research Library owns the items - otherwise, you can order them with a Lab purchase card from a variety of external article delivery vendors.

For questions or problems, contact the Library Service Desk at 667-5809 or by e-mail.
