The United States welcomes today's action by the Security Council's DPRK (1718) Sanctions Committee to impose new sanctions on North Korea and tighten enforcement of existing sanctions.  The Security Council directed the Committee to take these steps in response to North Korea's April 13 missile launch, which violated multiple Security Council resolutions and undermined regional stability.  The Committee's package of new measures constitutes a serious and credible response to North Korea's provocation.  We particularly welcome the Committee's decisions to update lists of sensitive nuclear and ballistic missile technology prohibited for transfer to or from North Korea, to impose an asset freeze on three critical North Korean entities responsible for North Korea's illicit activities, and to update the Committee's annual work plan.   These measures will increase North Korea's isolation and make it harder for Pyongyang to move forward with its illicit programs.  The Committee's strong and united response shows that the Security Council is determined that there be consequences for this provocation and any future North Korean violation.
