Energy Analyst

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is seeking an engineer to perform field energy assessments. This is a regular, full-time, entry-level position providing an excellent opportunity to work with a dedicated and professional staff on state and national projects while developing skills as an energy analyst. If you are interested in putting your education to work and helping conserve energy this is the job for you. Would you like to work with building, industrial, and agricultural energy systems (lighting, HVAC, motors, pumps and blowers) to save energy? This is your opportunity to do so while getting paid and developing new skills. The position will be based at NCAT's headquarters in Butte, Montana. NCAT is a private non-profit organization that works to foster and promote sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and communities.

Energy Analyst

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum requirements include basic engineering skills and experience with energy systems. A college degree is required. A degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering, or a related field is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in building technologies and learning how to perform commercial and industrial energy assessments. A demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting energy efficiency is required. Experience in energy systems, computer spreadsheets, computer energy performance simulation is desired. A background in field energy assessments including work with electrical systems, motors, pumps and blowers would also be desirable. Excellent communication skills and the ability to learn quickly are very important in this position. A high level of computer literacy is required including use of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Travel is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts building and residential energy assessments
  • Performs energy analysis with energy performance software
  • Researches technical information on energy efficiency and sustainable building technology topics
  • Provides technical assistance in person and over the telephone to builders, building contractors, and property management officials on energy efficient building practices
  • Prepares and edits written descriptions, topical summaries, bibliographies, and other information materials suitable for giving presentations and posting to websites while targeting a variety of audiences of varying degrees of technical knowledge
  • Communicates via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information
  • Recommends engineering and product modifications to increase energy performance
  • May attend workshops, seminars, and related events in support of project duties

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

$25,000 - $40,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include paid vacation and holidays, health, life and disability insurance, a cafeteria and 401(k) plan and a pleasant, professional office environment.

Energy Efficiency Marketing Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS:

This is an excellent opportunity for the ideal candidate with a combination of education and experience in energy and marketing, business management, or business development. Minimum requirements include a background in energy or building operations. A BS degree or equivalent in business development, marketing, finance, business planning, or value-added enterprise development is also required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

NCAT is a mission driven organization and the successful candidate must be fully supportive of its mission. Demonstrated interest and knowledge in promoting sustainable energy is required. Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, writing and proposal development are very important in this position. Must be able to travel.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Market and promote NCAT energy efficiency services
  • Communicate with potential customers and participants to enroll in programs that will identify energy efficiencies and energy cost savings
  • Work directly with energy engineers responsible for building assessments to identify future program participants
  • May assist in energy assessments of commercial and industrial sites
  • Develop marketing materials for energy efficient projects
  • Communicate via email, telephone, and in person to gather and disseminate information to participants
  • Work with other energy specialists to identify needs and appropriate delivery methods
  • Assist in project-development activities
  • May attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and related events in support of project duties

Internships

NCAT offers internship experiences for upper-level college and graduate students at many of its offices. Internships may take place during the school year or during the summer. Interns work alongside NCAT staff members, strengthening their skills by working with professionals in fields such as computer science, agricultural sciences, accounting, and energy efficiency. NCAT actively recruits interns from historically minority institutions, and the John Brown Minority Internship Fund supplements living expenses to make internships possible for minority students who are selected as interns.

2009 Marketing/Engineering Internships ~ Butte, Montana

NCAT is currently looking for two Marketing/Engineering Interns to work in our Butte, Montana office. One intern will work with NCAT's Energy Services team and the other will work with NCAT's Computer Services and Climate Change teams.

Marketing/Engineering Internship

Qualifications

The successful candidates will have at least two years of college-level coursework and/or experience in engineering, computer science, business or marketing. The interns must have very good communication skills including a high level of research and computer skills.

Opportunities

These internships are an opportunity to work with professional staff on national and state projects and pay $9.00 per hour. NCAT will work with the students to develop a part-time schedule that fits with his/her academic schedules. Successful students may continue through the school year and be eligible for full-time employment during the summer.

Summer Internship ~ Pennsylvania

Spend your summer working with professionals on sustainable agriculture projects. Learn new skills and put your college education to work! The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT) is looking for a qualified student to work in our Shavertown, PA office located on the historic Lands at Hillside Farms. This is a great opportunity for the right student to work with a national organization on local projects. This short-term internship could possibly be extended to a year if funding allows.

Opportunities:

  • The intern will work with an NCAT supervisor and program specialists to research sustainable agriculture, local food systems, and farm energy for development of technical publications.
  • The intern will gain hands-on experience working with local urban farmers to produce profitable, locally grown vegetables for marketing to a local institution.
  • The intern may work on website information for national distribution.
  • NCAT will work with the intern to develop a work plan that will meet their needs for gaining work experience and academic credit if needed.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should have good communication skills, an interest or background in agriculture and local food systems, an active and curious mind, and a high level of computer skills. Website development skills are preferred. A high school diploma is required. On-farm experience would be useful but is not required. Applicants with background in farming who are not currently enrolled in school may also be considered.

Compensation:

$8.50 to $10.50 per hour depending on experience.

2009 Summer Internship - Fayetteville, Arkansas

Spend your summer working with professionals on sustainable agriculture projects. Learn new skills and put your college education to work! NCAT is currently looking for qualified students to work in our Fayetteville, AR, office. Interns will be given the opportunity to display and increase their video production, desktop publishing, editing, proofreading, research, Web and computer skills.

Qualifications:

The successful candidates will have good communication skills, an interest or background in sustainable technologies in agriculture, energy or communities and a high level of computer skills. The successful student will interact with the public and NCAT staff in a professional manner.

Opportunities:

  • Students with experience or expertise in agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, farm management, animal science, agribusiness, or marketing may be assigned to project duties in Arkansas that could include researching and writing technical material for use by farmers, ranchers or educators.
  • An intern with desktop publishing skills may be assigned to producing and formatting publications, brochures or other documents.
  • An intern interested in video production may be assigned to shoot footage of local farms, interview farmers or others involved with sustainable agriculture, or edit footage to create multimedia projects.
  • All interns will interact closely with professional NCAT staff and leave the experience with increased skills and a better understanding of the principles of sustainability.

Compensation:

$8.00 per hour. An additional stipend for transportation and living costs may be available.
