About
OneBeat is an international music exchange that brings together musicians from around the world to work with their American peers and participate in a residency and a tour that focuses on musical collaboration and social engagement through innovative people-topeople diplomacy. Fellows will work together in the composition and performance of new cross-‐genre works, the creation of innovative recordings and videos, and the development of practices of music as civic engagement.
OneBeat will be a musical journey like no other. It is a chance for adventurous musicians from an incredible diversity of traditions to seek common ground, creating new musical combinations, pushing the boundaries of music technology, and finding ways to involve all members of society in the process of musical creativity. OneBeat endeavors to be the nexus of a new way of thinking about how music can connect people from across the world and around the block.
In the fall of 2012, 32 musicians (ages 19-35) from 21 countries came together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop ways that music can make a positive impact on our local and global communities. We anticipate that the 2013 OneBeat Fellows will an equally amazing group of innovative and socially-engaged musicians.
We are currently recruiting for the 2013 Fellowship. We anticipate selecting approximately 25 Fellows for the 2013 program.
One Beat is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. OneBeat builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy. It embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools, including music, to bring people, especially youth, together for greater understanding.
What are the goals for OneBeat?
- illustrate ways that music can be used for positive social engagement;
- provide unique opportunities for musical collaboration, engagement, and performance among the international participants and with their American peers and American music professionals;
- provide participants with instructive and informative experiences in their art form, and in the development of socially-engaged music programming;
- provide exposure to the creation and performance of world-class American music;
- create opportunities for sustaining relationships with U.S. arts professionals; and
- provide opportunities for educational outreach to American audiences and students.
Program
OneBeat will consist of two segments—residency and tour-each of which will run for about two weeks. OneBeat Fellows will have their travel, room, and board costs covered.
Residency
OneBeat Fellows will form cross-cultural and cross-genre ensembles that spontaneously invent new musical works, record and mix them in the OneBeat state-of-the-art mobile studios, and work with master musicians from a variety of musical traditions. While collaborating on the creation of original music, OneBeat Fellows will dialogue about the role of music in society, run workshops with youth and community groups, and develop strategies for social engagement in their home countries.
Tour
On the Tour, OneBeat Fellows will perform the music they develop during the residency, lead workshops with local youth and community groups, and jam with local musicians from a wide variety of American musical cultures. In each location, the group will perform at a variety of venues and public spaces, and implement interactive workshops they will have developed during the residency. Participants will also get a chance to experience the unique cultural landscape of each location by performing with local musicians, attending concerts, and exploring community cultural centers and attractions.

Age: Applicants must be between the ages of 19-35.

Participant Profile: OneBeat is open to musicians, who demonstrate both an advanced proficiency in their musical work, and an experience with or interest in developing ways to use music as a way to improve their communities. We are especially looking for musicians that have a strong commitment to their communities, and who are seeking new ways to engage in youth development, conflict resolution, overcoming cultural barriers, working towards more egalitarian and democratic societies, education, music therapy, and other ways in which music can serve the greater society.
Language: Fellows must demonstrate basic English proficiency in order to participate in ensembles and creative sessions.
Musical Genres: Musicians from any genre or background are encouraged to apply. We are looking for musicians who have achieved an advanced proficiency in styles and skills such as: hip hop, electronic music, traditional music, jazz, experimental, classical, sound-art installations, DJ-ing, audio engineering, etc.

December 17, 2012-January 21, 2013.
How do musicians apply? What are the application requirements?
Musicians will apply via the OneBeat website (http://www.1beat.org/), where they will describe their musical journeys and why they are interested in being a OneBeat Fellow. Applications will also require work samples (which can be in the form of audio, video, and/or written scores), including one solo work, one collaborative work, and 1-3 works of their choice that help us to understand them as a musician and person. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to include a CV or resume, and two letters of reference.
Can artists nominate themselves?
Yes, artists can apply without being nominated by anyone else.
Will artists be chosen from every country?
Because of the number of countries and the number of Fellowship slots, we cannot accept Fellows from every country. We will, however, to make every effort to have every region of the world represented.
How many artists will be selected? What expenses will be covered for the participant?
Approximately 20 foreign and 5 US participants will be selected this year. All costs will be covered for the Fellows, including travel, food, and accommodations. Fellows will also receive a per diem and modest honorarium (approximately $500).
What is the review criteria?
Musical Excellence refers to the quality of their performance, composition, improvisational, production and/or technological skill. Ideally OneBeat musicians will be innovating either stylistically, lyrically, or technologically within their musical worlds.
Social Engagement refers to the way in which musicians have used music to serve their communities or greater societies. This might consist of starting a music school, promoting peace and democracy through musical content, reviving dying musical traditions, and more.
Collaboration refers to the applicants’ openness and willingness to cross cultural and genre divides in creating original music, or re-interpreting traditional music, while trying to maintain the essence of each tradition.
When will artists be identified?
Selected Fellows and alternates will be notified on or before May 1, and will have 2 weeks to confirm their participation in the program.
Are OneBeat Fellows paid?
Fellows will not receive performance fees, but their travel and accommodations will be covered, and they will receive a per diem and modest honorarium (approximately $500).
How long will they stay in the US? What will the participants do while in the U.S?
The program will be 26-28 days in length. While in the US the Fellows will do a 10-14 day residency, during which they develop and rehearse original material, and re-imagine pre-existing material (such as pieces they’ve written in the past, or traditional tunes). They will then tour the US for two weeks performing, playing, and leading engagement events in a number of different American communities.
Will there be follow–on activities?
Yes, we hope to able to provide selected Fellows support to launch OneBeat-inspired music projects in their home countries. These could range from a series of performances, to recording sessions, to community engagement events or programs, to mini-OneBeats. We will support project ideas by connecting Fellows to resources, helping Fellows to focus ideas, create budgets, or write grants, and partnering directly with Fellows’ projects abroad. We also will encourage the OneBeat Fellows to be part of vibrant and growing OneBeat online community, through which Fellows will continue to be able to collaborate on new work.

OneBeat는 미 국무부 교육문화국의 혁신 프로그램으로, Bang On a Can’s Found Sound Nation이 시행하고 있습니다. 음악을 비롯, 다양한 도구를 통해 젊은 층을 중심으로 상호 이해를 증진한다는 힐러리 국무장관의 “스마트 파워 외교”의 일환입니다.

프로그램 구성
OneBeat는 크게 두 파트-레지던스와 투어-로 구성되어 있습니다. 각각 2주씩 진행되며, 참가자들은 교통비, 체류/숙박비를 모두 지원받습니다.
레지던스
OneBeat 참가자들은 문화와 장르를 넘나드는 앙상블을 이루어 창작과 녹음, 믹싱 작업을 진행하게 됩니다. OneBeat의 첨단 이동형 스튜디오가 제공되며, 다양한 장르의 뮤지션들과 협업하게 됩니다. 공동 작업을 통한 창작 이외에도, 음악의 사회적 역할에 대한 대화를 나누고 청소년 및 지역사회를 대상으로 하는 워크숍을 진행하며 고국에서 적용할 수 있는 사회 참여 전략을 구상합니다.
투어
투어 기간 동안 참가자들은 레지던스에서 만든 작품을 공연하고 청소년 및 지역사회 대상 워크숍을 개최하며 다양한 장르의 미국 뮤지션들을 만나 합주 세션을 갖습니다. 투어 중, 다양한 공연장 및 공공 장소에서 공연하게 되며, 레지던스 기간에 구상한 참여형 워크숍을 진행합니다. 또한 지역의 뮤지션들과 공연, 콘서트 관람, 관광 등을 함께 하며 미국 내 다양한 지역의 독특한 문화를 체험하게 됩니다.
