Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
May 2, 2011

On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Poland as you celebrate the 220th anniversary of the first Polish constitution.

This constitution, which granted groundbreaking liberties to the people of Poland, is a testament to your rich history and unending pursuit for greater freedom and prosperity. Poland is a model of democratic transition and hope – one that has inspired countless advocates for freedom around the world.

The United States is proud to count Poland as one of its closest friends and Allies, united by common values and mutual interest. We are working together to promote even greater democratic principles in Poland and across the globe — from our efforts to ensure political and economic stability in Poland’s eastern neighborhood, to our cooperation in Afghanistan.

As you celebrate your National Day, know that the United States stands with you. We are committed to this enduring alliance and the principles Poland has worked to uphold for so many years.
