Commanding General's 2011 November Holiday Safety Message

This November, America will once again celebrate two Holidays.  Veterans Day is 11 November 2011 and was established to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans, past and present.  Thanksgiving Day is 24 November 2011 and is a time for us to spend with family and friends as we consider and give thanks for the life we live.

One way we celebrate these holidays is with time off from duty and travel to visit relatives. More miles are driven during the Thanksgiving Holiday than any other time of the year.   As we take time off to travel and spend time with family and friends we must do so safely.  This year the Army’s off- duty fatalities are almost four times more than duty related fatalities. The use of seat belts remains the single most effective method of preventing serious injuries and reducing fatalities.  Additionally, the cool fall weather draws many motorcyclists to the road.  Motorcycle fatalities are 33% higher this year than last year for our Soldiers and a lack of discipline and risky behavior is cited in a vast majority of these deaths.  During our time off this holiday seasons, it is imperative we help each other identify and control risks.

For those cooking at home, Thanksgiving Day is the leading day of the year for home fires caused by cooking.  If using a turkey fryer be sure to follow all safety instructions and keep children away from the fryer.  Ask yourself “what can go wrong” and “what can I do about it.”  Finally, alcohol is involved in many of our off duty injuries.  Therefore, have prior to consuming alcohol and stick to the plan.

Leaders at all levels will ensure that a thorough safety briefing, vehicle inspection, and TRiPs Risk Assessment (https://safety.army.mil), are completed for each Soldier traveling outside of the 250 mile local area.  I want leaders at all levels to be engaged, know their Soldiers plans and stress responsible behavior on and off duty.

Again, be safe and enjoy your Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving weekends!
