Program Calendar

Each year there are two application periods for GeoCorps America / Geoscientists-in-the-Parks positions. Refer to the tables below for information regarding the application process and important deadlines.

  • NPS parks / regions / networks work with the Geologic Resources Division (GRD) to determine their geoscience resource management, education, and interpretive needs.
  • NPS parks / regions / networks prepare a draft GIP position description and enter it on-line at the Geological Society of America’s (GSA) GeoCorps America website at: https://rock.geosociety.org/g_corps/2011/myGC_sup.asp



November 2011

November 1: DEADLINE for NPS to submit position descriptions for spring/summer positions.

  • GSA / GRD meet in early November to select GIP positions and by November 15 notify parks / regions / networks / central offices that have or have not been selected for the GIP program.

December 2011 - January 2012

December 1:Spring/summer GIP positions are posted on the Geological Society of America's website where applicants can begin reviewing and applying for positions.

 

 

 

February - March 2012

February 1: Application postmark DEADLINE for spring/summer positions.

February 8: GIP Program Manager conducts conference call with NPS supervisors to go over details of the program.

February 15: NPS Supervisors receive applications for spring/summer positions.

February 15 – March 10: Supervisors screen applications for spring/summer positions, conduct phone interviews with top candidates, and make offer to the best candidate.

March 10: Interview / selection DEADLINE.

March 15: DEADLINE for the selected applicant to accept or decline the position offer.

  • GSA sends acceptance packets to selected participants. Selected participant must sign an agreement to officially accept the position and agree to terms of the GeoCorps program.


April 2012

    • GSA notifies applicants that were not selected for GeoCorps-GIP positions.
    • Spring/summer positions can begin any time after 4/1/2012. Most positions begin in April or June 2012.

July 2012

  • GSA bills NPS-GRD / park associations for spring/summer positions.


September 2012

September 15 : DEADLINE for GeoCorps participants to send final report & evaluation materials to the GSA; deadline for supervisors to submit an evaluation form to give feedback on participant & program to the GSA.
