Kern Plateau

Kern PlateauThis remote, high elevation plateau offers a retreat from the heat of summer and provides beautiful settings for almost any outdoor recreation activity. The Kern Plateau has been a summer destination for many cultures and generations, beginning with the earliest Native Americans. Popular outdoor activities include camping, hiking, OHV use, and horseback riding, along with hunting and fishing. In the winter, the area offers excellent snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing opportunities. The Cannell Meadow National Recreation Trail provides access on foot from Kernville. Public pastures for horsemen, several campgrounds, and wilderness trailheads are on the plateau. Blackrock Visitor Information Station is open during the summer; forest information and permits for fires, wilderness, and woodcutting are available here.

The Kern Plateau is the largest plateau in southern California. The area can be entered by taking the Sherman Pass Road to Sherman Pass.  It extends north to the boundary with the Inyo National Forest. It extends west to the Kern River Drainage and east to the South Fork drainage. It offers multiple recreation opportunities, solitiude, and beautiful scenery. This is a popular snowmobile area. Portions of the Golden Trout Wilderness [LINK] extend into the Kern Plateau.
