The Coast Guard actively participates in the Armed Forces Sports Program as a member of All-Navy Sports teams against teams from the Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force, (with the exception of Rugby) in the Armed Forces Championships. The Coast Guard participates to allow members that possess athletic skills to compete above the intramural level in team and individual sports. Our participation in Armed Forces Sports allows active duty members a chance to represent the Coast Guard at higher-level athletic competition.

Annually, the Coast Guard recognizes an elite male and female athlete of the year, not only for excellence in their chosen sport, but also for notable community service making them excellent role models. This is an excellent opportunity for commands to recognize the hard work and dedication of active duty Coast Guard members that have achieved the highest levels of athletic performance.

The Coast Guard recognizes athletic competition as an important element of MWR. Athletic competition teaches teamwork, sacrifice, dedication, and develops an esprit de corps. It is the Coast Guard's policy to encourage and support all military athletes to participate in athletic competition, however due to limited funding, we are only able to support active duty athletes in this endeavor.
