FMCSA is pleased to offer several training and outreach opportunities for its field staff and industry stakeholders. Thus far, FMCSA has conducted several national webinars and local presentations throughout the country. On April 27, April 29 and May 27, 2009, the National Training Center (NTC) provided three sessions of a 2-hour webinar explaining the new Final Rule issued on December 17, 2008, that makes intermodal equipment providers (IEPs) subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs) for the first time, and establishes shared safety responsibility among IEPs, motor carriers, and drivers. Over 200 FMCSA staff, State partners, and external industry stakeholders attended the sessions. Beginning in December 2009, intermodal equipment providers must have in effect regular and systematic inspection, repair, and maintenance programs for intermodal equipment; they will also need to track defects reported and repairs made. By December 2010, each IEP is required to identify its equipment with the USDOT number assigned by FMCSA. As the implementation dates of this rule become imminent, NTC will continue to work with the Intermodal team and provide additional training and information.
