NAFTA Safety Stats presents information and statistics on the U.S. operations of all U.S. registered interstate and intrastate motor carriers broken out by national domicile of the carrier. The information and statistics are presented based on the carrier's domicile within each of the three North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) nations: the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The reports present motor carrier safety statistics for 2007-2011.
General Statistics

General Statistics offers two sets of reports. The Summary section shows high-level MCMIS Census, Inspection, Compliance Review, Traffic Enforcement, and Crash data. The Summary section also includes a US and Mexican Carriers Report that compares inspection and crash data between US domiciled carriers and Mexican domiciled carriers. The Border Data Reports provide incoming truck and bus crossing data by state and port of entry for 1999-2008 and trade data for 2003-2008.

Program Measures

The Program Measures section includes summarized statistics for three FMCSA Safety Programs: Roadside Inspections, Compliance Reviews, and Traffic Enforcement. Of particular interest are the Commercial Zone Reports within the Inspection section. These reports provide statistics on those inspections conducted within the commercial zones of the U.S. - Mexico border.

Carrier Safety Performance

Carrier Safety Performance contains a summary of crash data. Additionally, direct links to SafeStat are provided. SMS delivers carrier details as well as national, service center and state summary SMS run results.

Who is included in this data? With the exception of the Border Data reports, there are two types of data included in NAFTA Safety Stats: summary statistics on census data for U.S. DOT active motor carriers and summary statistics based on safety event data. To be included in the summary statistics on census data, the motor carriers must meet the following criteria:
  • Domiciled within the United States (including the District of Columbia and U.S. territories), Canada, or Mexico with an active U.S. DOT number; and
  • Be an interstate and/or intrastate HM motor carrier (not including shipper-only operations, "other" registrants, or non-HM intrastate carriers).

Summary statistics based on safety event data includes carriers with interstate and intrastate operations. Domicile information is derived from safety event data.

The Border Data Reports use the U.S. Customs definitions which include the number of arriving buses, whether or not they are carrying passengers, and all trucks not including privately owned pick-up trucks.

2011 as of December 16, 2011.
