The Oak Ridge Leadership and Computing Facility (OLCF) is hosting a Performance Analysis Tools workshop.  The event will be held March 20-21, 2012.  The purpose of the workshop is to provide training on the CrayPAT and Vampir performance analysis tools.

Registration is required. In-person attendance is limited to staff and those who already have access to the ORNL campus. The workshop will be simultaneously webcast for off-site participants.

Overview

The first step to porting codes to Titan is to expose greater levels of parallelism.  Performance analysis tools allow one to identify ‘hot spots’ in codes that might be potential targets for increasing parallelism.

 CrayPAT

Cray PAT is a profiling tool, which can provide information on application performance. Cray PAT can be used for basic profiling, measuring MPI and OpenMP. Cray PAT can measure serial, multiprocessor, and multithreaded programs.

 Vampir

The Vampir suite is a set of tools to investigate in detail the parallel performance of MPI-, OpenMP-, CUDA- and hybrid codes running at large scale. Although oriented towards tracing, Vampir allows profile-based output, filtering of information and detailed analysis, handling large amounts using the parallel analysis of VampirServer.

HMPP Wizard / Performance Analyzer

HMPP Wizard is an interactive diagnosis tool to improve GPU kernels in a step-by-step manner. HMPP Wizard answers primary performance issues to help code migration to manycore architectures within an incremental process.

HMPP Wizard identifies patterns of well-known computations and then proposes specific optimization advices based on the knowledge of CAPS experts in the HPC domain. HMPP Wizard also provides more generic programming advices to make kernels more suitable to a GPU execution.
