Add extra security online to my Social Security account

Why is Social Security asking for financial information online if I choose to add extra security to my Social Security account?

Social Security’s new security process and federal guidelines require that we take extra identity verification measures when you do business with us online.  It gives us another way to ensure that you are who you say you are.

If you go online to add extra security to your my Social Security account, you must first verify your identity by providing us with some financial information using one of the following:

  • The last eight digits from your Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card
  • W-2 tax form information
  • 1040 Schedule SE (self-employment) tax information
  • The amount of your last direct deposit from your Social Security benefits

We do not store any of this information, and we will not call you to verify this information.

Give us some feedback.
