Signing up for Medicare drug coverage

When can I sign up for Medicare drug coverage?

If you are newly entitled or enrolled in Medicare, you may enroll in a Medicare prescription drug plan or join a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage during your initial enrollment period for Medicare. If you do not join during this period, your next chance to join will be during the annual coordinated election period from October 15 to December 7 each year. Your coverage will begin on January 1 of the following year.

However, you may qualify for a special enrollment period if:

  • You lose or change your employer or union-based coverage
  • You move out of the prescription drug or Medicare-Advantage service area that offers your prescription drug coverage
  • Your prescription drug plan goes out of business or loses its Medicare certification

To begin your search for a plan, please use the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder, on the official U.S. Government site for people with Medicare.
