8/3/2012 - WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy congratulate the Coast Guard on its 222nd birthday Aug. 4.

In a letter to the commandant of the Coast Guard, Schwartz wrote:

"Congratulations to you and the United States Coast Guard as you celebrate 222 years of service to our Nation. Since 1790, the men and women of the Coast Guard have placed service above self in faithfully executing the Coast Guard's mission to protect the United States' economic and security interests in our country's maritime regions.

"On behalf of the men and women of the United States Air Force, we salute you and your team, and wish you the very best on the Coast Guard's birthday. May the men and women in your ranks remain Semper Paratus."

Roy wrote a letter to the master chief petty officer of the Coast Guard stating:

"I'm writing to extend sincere wishes for a Happy Birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard. Here's to 222 years of loyal service to our great nation!

"The U.S. Coast Guard provides tremendous support to the Nation through its eleven distinct missions. From maintaining our ports, waterways and coastal areas to conducting search and rescue operations, today's Coast Guardsmen exemplify the Coast Guard Core Values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty.

"Working as a team will be increasingly important as we continue to meet modern defense and homeland security challenges. We continue to be proud and honored to serve alongside our Coast Guard Shipmates in the Joint fight.

"On behalf of every Airman, we wish you all the best as you celebrate this milestone and look forward to serving with you for many years to follow.

"Happy Birthday and Semper Paratus!"
