LENNY WILKINS: Team sports you’ve got to play with other people.

01:00:02.333,01:00:06.250
It’s getting along with people.
It’s working together to be successful.

I had a lot of friends that got interested in basketball
and they would be on the playgrounds.

01:00:30.750,01:00:34.750
So I started going to the playgrounds a lot.
There were games going on all the time.

01:00:34.750,01:00:37.500
And if you were a good enough player,
you could get in those games.

01:00:37.500,01:00:41.083
Once you got involved, everybody loved to compete.

01:00:41.083,01:00:45.042
Rucker Park is one of the ones that survived.

01:00:45.042,01:00:50.750
Rucker himself, you know, he saw what he had
and he wanted to keep it alive.

01:00:50.750,01:00:57.125
So every summer they had huge competition.
He maintained the park, he improved the park.

01:00:57.125,01:01:03.333
If you have activity in the community and get people interested,
people start taking pride in that.

01:01:03.333,01:01:06.250
Reporters started to come down and watch the kids play.

01:01:06.250,01:01:08.292
They began to write about it, talk about it.

01:01:08.292,01:01:12.750
And it has maintained its legacy, so to speak.

01:01:12.750,01:01:15.708
You’d show up on the playground
and all we had to do was have a ball.

01:01:15.708,01:01:20.167
A ball and a hoop.
A lot of kids, poor kids, that was our way out.

01:01:20.167,01:01:24.750
So it was huge in keeping us off the streets or out of trouble.

01:01:24.750,01:01:30.083
Basketball has been a steppingstone for me,
but I also know that you have to work hard.

01:01:30.083,01:01:34.000
All young people need to be able to make decisions,
to be accountable for what they do.

01:01:34.000,01:01:35.583
I think sports does that.

01:01:35.583,01:01:40.750
And, certainly, the kids that play at Rucker Park,
they embellish that.
