01/28/2013 - Press conference on climate change and a proposed moratorium on wind energy
Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday opposed a moratorium on wind power projects in Vermont that he said would send a “terrible message” to the rest of the country and set back efforts to stop global warming. A member of the U.S. Senate environment and energy committees, Sanders urged state lawmakers to reject a three-year ban on wind power projects. “If Vermont ceases new wind development the message will go out all across the country, spread by the well-funded coal and oil companies, that even in Vermont – progressive Vermont – there is not a serious commitment to combating global warming,” Sanders said.

12/20/2012 - Don’t Cut Benefits for Disabled Veterans
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and leaders of The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other veterans’ organizations on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012 denounced proposals to cut veterans’ disability benefits as part of a year-end deal on deficits. A member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the Budget Committee, Sanders said there are better approaches to deficit reduction than slashing benefits for more than 3 million disabled veterans and their families.

11/16/2012 - Hands Off Social Security Summit
A packed hearing room on Capitol Hill was the scene of a summit meeting November 15th with seniors, the disabled, and grassroots groups fighting with Sen. Bernie Sanders and others in Congress to protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from budget cuts.
10/09/2012 - Hunger in Vermont and America
Nationwide, hunger is at an all-time high. Last year, almost 45 million people - or one in every seven Americans - received food stamps, more than at any other time in our nation's history. In Vermont, more than one in eight households do not have the money to fully meet their food needs at all times, according to Hunger Free Vermont. More than 12,000 Vermont children depend on food shelves each month and almost 10,000 Vermont seniors face the threat of hunger. So to Sen. Bernie Sanders, it is "unconscionable" that cuts in a federal emergency hunger program have resulted in a 50 percent reduction in food supplies from that program for the Vermont Foodbank.

The Department of Labor recently announced a $3.4 million grant for the education and training needs of the agriculture, food production, waste disposal and energy production industries in Vermont.
09/21/2012 - Do Not Cut Social Security
A major bloc of 29 senators took a strong stand against any cuts to Social Security as part of a deficit reduction deal. "We will oppose including Social Security cuts for future or current beneficiaries in any deficit reduction package," the senators said in a letter circulated by Sen. Bernie Sanders. 09/18/2012 - Community Health Centers Expand
A $1.2 million expansion of the Plainfield Health Center was dedicated on Monday. In the past decade, Vermont has gone from having two Federally Qualified Health Centers to eight, including 47 sites where more than 120,000 Vermonters get primary health care, dental care, mental health counseling and low-cost prescription drugs. Nearly one in five Vermonters now get primary care from a community health center.
09/13/2012 - Guest Chaplain Rev. Marcel Rainville
A Roman Catholic priest from Vermont delivered the daily prayer after the Senate was gaveled to order on Thursday. "We pray for these our elected officials," the Rev. Marcel Rainville prayed. "Guide them with good judgment in the exercise of their duties." Father Rainville was recommended for the role of guest chaplain by Sen. Bernie Sanders. "He is a kind and gentle human being and is much beloved in our state," the senator said of Father Rainville.

“Everyone Loves a Parade!”—a 124-by-16-foot Trompe L’oeil mural covers the length of the wall along the alleyway to the parking garage. The mural is custom-designed by renowned Canadian muralist Pierre Hardy, widely-known for his inventive and meticulously-detailed large-scale pieces. Grand Master Samuel de Champlain leads the charge as the scene depicts an evolution in time along Church Street. Notable and everyday Burlingtonians, downtown businesses, and iconic images of the past 400 years can be seen amidst overflowing illustrations.

06/20/2012 - Health Care Expands
In Vermont, an $11.3 million new facility at the Community Health Centers of Burlington was opened on Monday. Another $10 million in federal funds was previously awarded to other Vermont health centers to hire more staff and renovate facilities. Altogether, there are now eight federally qualified health centers in Vermont. Each has satellite sites creating a total of 48 locations treating more than 121,000 patients, one of the highest participation rates in the country.

05/22/2012 - End Fed Conflicts
Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced legislation to prohibit banking industry executives from serving as directors of the 12 Federal Reserve regional banks. The recent multi-billion-dollar trading loss at JPMorgan Chase underscored the need to structurally reform the Federal Reserve System to make a more democratic institution responsive to the needs of ordinary Americans, not just Wall Street CEOs.
05/10/2012 - End Polluter Welfare Rally
May 10, 2012 Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), held a news conference today to announce legislation that would eliminate all oil, coal and gas production subsidies. The measure would do away with tax breaks, financial assistance, royalty relief, direct federal research and development and many loopholes that benefit the fossil fuel industry. Under current law, more than $113 billion in federal subsidies would go to oil, coal and gas industries in the coming decade. The bill is supported by 350.org, Taxpayers for Common Sense, Friends of the Earth, Sierra Club, Defenders of Wildlife, Earth Justice and Oil Change International. Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, Brent Blackwelder, president emertitis of Friends of the Earth, and Ryan Alexander, president of Taxpayers for Common Sense will join Sanders and Ellison.
