Does Social Security consider a person's financial situation when deciding how much a person must repay on amounts owed?
If an individual's financial situation changes, we can adjust the collection amount accordingly. Under certain conditions, we can also approve a waiver of the entire overpayment or the remaining balance owed.
You can request a waiver using the SSA-632, call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, or contact your local Social Security office.
