Our Environment: Today’s Scene

2013 January 29

'Look', January 20, 2013 by 'photocafe' on Flickr.

Last Friday, we asked you to submit photos that captured the small moments, that can create the larger picture of our lives and environment today.

Today’s chosen image was taken on January 20, 2013, shared with us by ‘photocafe’ on Flickr.

State of the Environment is your opportunity to be a partake in Documerica’s vision. Forty years ago, 22,000 photographs made EPA’s final cut. 22,000 images taken through a decade, captured the average American day, our national challenges and achievements. The United States environment, had never been documented like this before. Until now, Documerica was an achievement that was not revisited, it was an opportunity awaiting a chance for evolution.

Decades from today, what will your photos tell us about our world?

Entries may be submitted to State of the Environment on Flickr through 2013.

Documerica and New Jersey

We invite you to share scenes of New Jersey today for State of the Environment. Below, we have highlighted a few standouts for ideas. This project is about what you see happening in our lives and environment today.

Take it up a notch by matching any Documerica scenes as they exist today, we’ll give it added attention as part of the Documerica Then and Now Challenge.

The Forest and the Trees

Annapolis Rocks Pano, January 20, 2013 by Danny.Hart on Flickr

It’s easy to lose sight of the forest. Even if you are one who thinks about the big picture, you may find it difficult to express yourself when it comes to those trees.

State of the Environment is your opportunity to use the trees to show the forest. Your photographs each  show the small happenings in our lives: the moments, the view points, the small signs. Each scene you share becomes a building block. Together, those building blocks create a larger picture than any one person could build alone.

How many words, are the 2,635 photos submitted to date, speaking?

This weekend, we invite you to photograph these small signs, that will undoubtedly reflect the bigger picture of what’s going on in our environment today.

To find inspiration, glance at a single photo within Documerica. Then, step back to gaze at the mosaic of moments.  Rather powerful isn’t it?

Entries may be submitted to State of the Environment on Flickr through 2013.

Humans and the Environment

2013 January 24

Last Friday, we asked you to submit photos that captured humans in our environment - whether they knew it or not. We put forth this theme to nudge the notion of what our environment is. Where does it begin and end? In this spirit, we chose this photo today. Congratulations to ‘ckongyc’ on Flickr for this scene, taken on January 21, 2013.

This documentary of public submissions, State of the Environment, continues to ask the question: what is our environment? Together, your images are shaping the larger picture of our environment and way of life today. Documerica is a gift that we can forever reflect on. It holds countless stories and speaks to an entire decade of change in the United States. Years from now, what will today’s photos tell us about our world?

Today, it is your chance to be a part of history.
