Libraries are essential to the free flow of ideas and to maintaining, increasing and spreading knowledge. As repositories of books and other printed material, they are key to promote reading and writing. UNESCO promotes the work of libraries since 60 years.

A large number of school, community, children, public and other libraries have been destroyed or severely damaged by the tsunami of 26 December 2004.
