Earlier this afternoon, Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs James K. Glassman hosted a conference call for bloggers. During the call, Under Secretary Glassman highlighted public diplomacy initiatives that utilize new media and spoke about how the United States is engaging in "blogging diplomacy." Of particular note, Glassman recounted how the U.S. Digital Outreach Team participated in an online exchange with Ali Akbar Javanfekr, the Iranian president's media adviser, on Javanfekr's blog. The entire transcript of the blog was published in Iran on August 27, 2008.

Following his opening comments, Glassman responded to questions posed by foreign affairs bloggers. DipNote's editors are confident that it is a conversation our readers will find interesting. You may listen to the conversation or read the transcript.

After reading the transcript, I would like to comment that I think that the idea of interactive communication is a good one. As Under Secretary Glassman said in his opening remarks, "Simply preaching at people doesn't work". That is very true! The Democracy Video Project sounds very interesting. Please keep us updated on its progress. (On Dipnote). A picture is worth a thousand words. Also, I found the Digital Outreach project very interesting, especially since the first digital conversation involved the Iranian media with Javanfer's blogsite. That transcript should be quite informative, even if it is mostly propaganda. Still, it has to be helpful to the DoS and its desire to communicate with all countries.
