Lancers debut in strong fashion
The Lakenheath boys basketball team opened the season a week later than some of its peers. Maybe the extra practices helped.
The Lancers got off to a good start Friday and Saturday, downing Baumholder 67-40, a day after beating American School of London 51-47.
Lakenheath built a 34-16 halftime lead and cruised to victory over their guests from Germany. CJ Jackson’s game-high 25 points and AJ Ransom’s 17 paced an explosive performance for the Lancer offense, offsetting the 16 points dropped in by the Bucs’ Josh Gouty. Nick Winkie and Andre Bower snatched double-figure rebounds with 13 and 10, respectively.
Ben McDaniels had a strong game for Baumholder with nine points and eight rebounds.
Friday in London, AJ Ransom drained two free throws with six seconds to play to deliver a season-opening win for the visiting Lancers.
Ransom totaled 15 points and 5 rebounds for Lakenheath, which visits Region I rival International School of Brussels next weekend.
Baumholder 66, Alconbury 50: Friday at Alconbury, the visiting Bucs used a diverse offensive attack to overcome Kevin Beasley’s game-high 22-point effort.
Five players scored between eight and 19 points for Baumholder.
Patch 73, Kaiserslautern 52: Saturday at Kaiserslautern, a battle between teams with Division I championship aspirations fell firmly in favor of the visiting Panthers.
John Robinson’s game-high 19 points led the Panthers, who broke open a back-and-forth affair with an explosive 23-point third quarter. Patch remains undefeated while Ktown absorbs its first loss of the year.
Each team hosts Division II opponents next weekend, with Patch welcoming Hohenfels and Ktown facing Baumholder.
Ansbach 52, Hohenfels 47: Saturday at Hohenfels, Xavier Cage and Brandon Dunn scored 15 points apiece to guide the Cougars to a quality road win.
Ansbach overcame a strong effort from Chris Terrell, who narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Cougars collected their first win of the season on their final opportunity before the holiday break; they return to action Jan. 11. Hohenfels visits Stuttgart next weekend for a pair of games against Division I frontrunner Patch.
Ansbach 51, Heidelberg 47: Friday at Ansbach, the Cougars earned a solid Region III victory over the defending Division I champions.
Brandon Dunn poured in 26 points for Ansbach to deliver the team’s first in-region victory in two tries. The Lions fell to 1-1 in the region entering a home-and-home series with Schweinfurt next weekend.
Marmymount 36/56, Sigonella 21/31: At Sigonella, both parts of a Friday-Saturday Region IV doubleheader went to visiting Marymount International.
Sigonella held its own with the visitors in Friday’s first half, entering the break down by two points before yielding a 20-point second half. MMI jumped out quickly Saturday, building a 15-7 lead through eight minutes and coasting to the finish line.
The games opened the regular season for both programs. Marymount isn’t scheduled to play again until Jan. 18, while Sigonella is back in action next weekend with a pair of home games against Vicenza.
Wiesbaden 63/63, Black Forest Academy 44/44: At Kandern, Germany, the visiting Warriors posted wins by identical scores on Friday and Saturday.
Kelsey Thomas poured in 32 points and Andrew Murray scored 22 over the two games for Wiesbaden, while BFA’s Travis Olson led his squad in both halves of the doubleheader with 12 and 16 points, respectively.
The games were the first of the season for Wiesbaden; BFA fell to an even 2-2 with the setbacks.
Naples 57/59, AOSR 34/49: At Rome, the visiting Wildcats swept Friday and Saturday matchups from their Region IV adversary.
DJ Stockman’s 29 points spearheaded Friday’s rout as Naples held its host to single digits in all four quarters. AOSR fared better Saturday, building a 12-point first-half lead before the Wildcats took off on a 39-17 second-half rally.
