Unbeaten Rota hands Menwith Hill first loss

NSA ROTA, Spain - The defending European Division III champion Rota Admirals rode the running and passing of fullback K.C. Mason to a 44-10 victory Friday over the visiting Menwith Hill Mustangs.

Mason, a senior, rushed eight times for 154 yards and three touchdowns and completed a 60-yard TD pass to Cocy Holland for a fourth TD.

“We use the shotgun formation,” Rota coach Jame Crowell explained by telephone on Saturday about his TD-chucking fullback, “and sometimes we snap the ball directly to him.”

Ramon Quijano ran for 48 yards and two touchdowns on just four caries, and Joe Camacho added 24 yards on four carries as the Admirals (3-0) won their 11th straight game. They next host winless Sigonella on Saturday.

Menwith Hill (2-1) scored in the final period when senior quarterback Schuyler Backlar tight-roped down the right sideline for a 20-yard TD run, then completed a two-point conversion pass to Jordan Crouse. The Mustangs added their final two points on a safety registered when Rota snapped the ball high into its own end zone.

“His performance was phenomenal,” Crowell said about Backlar. “His team is very well-coached and he’s impressive.”

The points were the first allowed this season by Rota, which is to entertain unbeaten Baumholder on Saturday.
